Loyola University of Chicago Community and Local Engaged for Air Research
Funded by the Schreiber Venture Fund Innovation Grant
CLEAR is a multidisciplinary team collaborating to develop a more robust understanding of air quality in the Chicagoland area.
Currently, there are large discrepancies in air quality across Chicago - that's where we step in.
Covering the entire city of Chicago, the project aims to mitigate the discrepancies that disproportionally effect Chicago's South and Southwest neighborhoods.
Data Base Expansion
Updated air quality readings from sensors around the city to train model.
New sensors were identified and updated (2024-2025), while data is currently being requested.
Connecting with community members to locate new air sensor hosts and share data.
Particulate Matter Modeling
Particulate matter are tiny particles found in the air that are small enough to entire the body, potentially causing asthma, respiratory inflammation, cancers, and other negative health outcomes.
Our models measure variables of humidity, temperature, wind gust, longitude, latitude, and more.
The models identify poor air quality, areas of uncertainty, and health disparities across demographic groups.
Community Engagement
Partner with local community organizations and members to place additional sensors.
Create community partners for collaboration to partner on events and educational opportunities.
Connect with community partners to build a larger network of advocates for clean air.
Dashboard Development
Develop a user-friendly dashboard to ensure sensors and data models functions as intended.
Continue installing additional sensors in new locations based on data gaps and community needs.
Expand our network base by sharing our dashboard and its data with community partners.
